Abdominoplasty

(Tummy Tuck)

A tummy tuck procedure (abdominoplasty) can produce a tighter flatter stomach by the removal of excess fat and skin from the abdomen.

The procedure involves an incision made from hip bone to hip bone and just above the pubic line. Excess fat and skin is then removed from the lower tummy. The resulting scar can be covered with underwear. The surgery brings about an improved appearance and also stops the slackening process of the abdominal wall.

About Abdominoplasty

Why Have a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck can make a dramatic difference to your profile if you have saggy skin or a rounded stomach. The procedure can produce a beautifully flat stomach that will look great in skinny jeans or a swimsuit (even a bikini, once scars have healed).

The surgical procedure known as a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is one of the most requested cosmetic plastic surgeries in the United Kingdom. This surgical procedure tightens abdominal muscles and removes excess fat and skin at the same time. Men and women with sagging, loose abdominal skin and fat can benefit greatly from this surgery.

Am I A Good Tummy Tuck Candidate?

If you have excess skin and fat in the abdominal area that diet and exercise has no effect on, then abdominoplasty could be a good option for you.

  • Had Children? Pregnancy is wonderful, but causes the skin and muscles of some women to stretch beyond the point the skin and muscles can return to their pre-pregnancy shape and location naturally, without surgical assistance.
  • Lost Weight? You have probably worked very hard to lose a great deal of weight, only to be left with excess, sagging skin in the abdominal area.
  • Lost Tone? People of a certain age who lose skin elasticity as a result of the normal aging process can also benefit from an abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty leaves a permanent scar across the bikini line area, but this will fade in time.  The incision is made in a natural crease of the skin and will be hidden by your clothing.

Postponing a tummy tuck until your childbearing years have ended is a good idea and one a highly skilled and experienced cosmetic surgeon would suggest.

Your Consultation

During your medical consultation, your Surgeon will evaluate your health and expectations. Be sure to discuss your expectations frankly with your Surgeon and be sure to say if you smoke or if you are taking any vitamins, or medication.

Our Surgeon will assess your medical and family history and request any pre-operative tests which may be necessary and discuss your expectations and explain what can realistically be achieved. Your Surgeon will explain the risks and benefits of this procedure and perform an examination.

The Surgeon may decide it is not in your best medical interest to proceed with surgery. If you are not satisfied with your medical consultation, a second consultation with another Surgeon can be arranged for a further opinion.

Surgeons and Anaesthetists

All of the Anaesthetists and Plastic Surgeons that would carry out your procedure are fully qualified independent professionals who have successfully completed years of training. The Surgeon undertaking the consultation will be scheduled to operate. However in unforeseen circumstances it may be necessary to change Surgeons. In this instance the replacement Surgeon would be of an equal standing. All the Surgeons are registered with the GMC. You may wish to confirm this by telephoning 0845 357 3456 or writing to them at: General Medical Council, 178 Great Portland Street, London, WC1N 6JE.

Tummy Tuck Aftercare

Abdominal Binder

After surgery is completed, you will have small tubes positioned either side of the incision.  These remove excess fluid and will be removed before you are discharged.

Immediately following surgery, you will be fitted with a post-surgical garment. This is designed to apply the correct pressure to your stomach area which helps healing and final result.  The garment prevents swelling and reduces bleeding.  It is fastened with velcro for ease of use.  You should expect to wear this garment for around 6 weeks, but your surgeon will give individual advice on this.

Recovery rates vary depending on the extent of the procedure as well as individual factors (e.g. smokers tend to recover more slowly).  You can expect to feel sore and swollen for the first few weeks and should avoid strenuous activity for 4-6 weeks, although moderate activity aids circulation and therefore recovery.

Post-op appointments

Post-operative follow-up is of paramount importance. Each patient undergoing surgery will be given post operative appointments for wound management and suture removal. Post-operative instructions are vital and we consider it very important that you adhere to them. Failing to follow these guidelines and attend your appointments can adversely affect the outcome of surgery and put patient safety at risk.
