Double benefits of weight loss surgery

A recent study has confirmed the commonly held belief that eating too quickly is associated with over-eating and, ultimately, obesity. The news might seem obvious, but it has made gastric bands even more popular.

The research was published in the grandly-titled Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM) and the findings were pretty straightforward. Eating faster stops the release of hormones that make you feel full, so over-eating and weight-gain can result.

So, aside from a healthy diet and regular exercise – the starting point for any weight-loss campaign – slower eating should accompany any obesity surgery you undergo.

Re-education the secret of gastric band success

Gastric bands – and, in other cases, gastric balloons – are so successful precisely because they re-educate the patient about sensible eating.

They are not a quick-fix, easy weight loss solution. Both procedures reduce the quantity of food that is required to fill the stomach, but the speed at which food is eaten is also closely monitored in the month after the treatment.

The result is a healthier approach to food when the gastric band or balloon is removed, with smaller portions, chewed more often and eaten less quickly resulting in major weight loss (in some cases as much as 15 stone!).

A spokesman for obesity surgery experts Why Go Abroad said: “These procedures are so popular because they don’t just help people to lose weight, but to keep it off and stay healthy in the future.

“Gastric band prices start from £5,450 and we are seeing more and more people enquiring about the treatment and putting their health first.”
