The future for gastric bands?

A new study into weight-loss among seriously obese children has concluded that gastric bands might be the best way for many teens to get healthy.

The amazing research, carried out in Australia and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), compared the weight-loss of two separate groups of overweight teenagers – the first of which were put on a healthy eating and diet plan, with the second group given a gastric band.

Those fitted with a gastric band lost almost 80 per cent of their excess weight, compared to those on a healthy lifestyle programme who lost just 13 per cent.

Most leading obesity surgery providers in the UK, like Why Go Abroad, currently only offer a Lapband to adult patients.

However, the new evidence suggests that the future might be very different, with gastric bands now seemingly a safe and effective method of weight-loss surgery for some teenagers.

No immediate change in gastric band policy

A spokesman for Why Go Abroad said: “Healthy eating and exercise are always the first option for anyone looking to lose weight, but many Why Go Abroad patients have seen incredible results from a healthy lifestyle and a gastric band.

“We use expert consultants and are a highly responsible provider, and at present we have a strict policy of only carrying out gastric band operations on adults.

“However, the medical industry does change and with new research like this being carried out, the future of Lapbands could be very interesting.”
