Tummy Tuck v Liposuction – Weighing Up Your Options

Achieving that perfectly toned body has never been easy however much you exercise, but it’s far from impossible, especially with modern surgical procedures to help. But how do you tell which one is right for you?

Let’s look at some of the pros and cons of just two common procedures, liposuction and the tummy tuck.

Liposuction is an operation to literally suck out some of the excess fat from your body. It concentrates on those places where fat collects and it takes away excess fat which may be stubborn and resistant to exercise to leave a smooth and slimmer profile. It’s quick, it’s simple and you recover in a matter of hours.

A tummy tuck is more complicated. It improves your abdominal area, helping to produce a flatter, more trimmed stomach. The procedure will involve liposuction if required to remove fat, but will also remove excess skin to give you a flatter, tighter tummy.

So when would we recommend each one? Obviously, that depends on your personal situation.

Liposuction is usually recommended where the skin still has good tone and definition – if you’re younger or do lots of exercise, for instance. But let’s say you have a family. After three or four children, you’ll build up some excess skin perfectly naturally – it’s simply one of the normal after effects of pregnancy. This would be an ideal situation for a tummy tuck to tighten the abdominal walls and give you back your definition.

As for the operation itself, liposuction needn’t take long for small areas, although you may choose to have a number of areas done (e.g. stomach and love handles). You may experience some bruising afterwards, but it won’t take long for that to disappear of its own accord. The disadvantages? Liposuction only really works if your skin is already in good condition and you do not have excess skin.

A tummy tuck, on the other hand, it is seen as a more major procedure. However, with a good surgeon, you can expect to be up and about the next day.

Because a tummy tuck removes skin as well as fat, it will leave a bigger scar than liposuction alone, but that will fade in time and usually be hidden by clothing . Obviously, our skilled surgeons will keep it to an absolute minimum, but even the faintest line is unavoidable.
