Body Mass Index (BMI) is a standard method of calculating your weight in relation to your body height. The results of this simple test will indicate how much excess body weight you are carrying (if any). This test is used internationally and is well understood by doctors, nurses and dietitians.

Understanding your BMI

Under19  - Underweight
You should not be considering any form of weight loss plan.

19 - 25 - Normal Weight
Congratulations! Your weight is normal. You should not be considering any form of weight loss plan.

25 - 30 - Mildly Obese
A little weight loss through diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes would help to lower your BMI.  You could consider non-surgical weight loss programmes such as the gastric balloon programme, which by making you feel fuller, enables you to learn to eat less

30+ - Moderately Obese
At this BMI, there are increased health risks e.g. heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, asthma, sleep apnoea and several cancers. You could consider the gastric band.

+35 - Severe Obesity
The increased health risks described above are more significant as body mass index increases.  The best form of weight loss surgery would be the gastric band.

40+ - Morbid Obesity
There is a very high risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, asthma, sleep apnoea and several cancers. You are almost certainly a candidate for obesity surgery and should consider the gastric band.

50+ - Super Obesity
This is potentially life threatening obesity, which carries an extremely high risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, asthma, sleep apnoea and several cancers. You are almost certainly a candidate for obesity surgery and should consider the gastric band.

Important

Please remember that BMI is only a guide.  It is possible to have a BMI above 25 without increased health risks as BMI calculations do not distinguish between fat and muscle.  Therefore athletes may have higher BMI due to the additional muscle.
