Breast Enlargement, also known as breast augmentation or breast implants, is the UK's most popular cosmetic surgery procedure and one that many millions of women throughout the world have decided to have to improve the way they look.
A breast augmentation may result in a more flattering, better proportioned figure which gives you more clothing options, and could enhance your confidence and self-esteem as it has done for the many women who have already had this cosmetic surgery procedure.
Some reasons why women decide to have a Breast Augmentation are for personal reasons. They may feel their breast size is too small in comparison to their overall body shape. Other reasons include correction of a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss. Another reason for a Breast enlargement is a reconstructive technique following previous breast surgery.
The procedure is relatively simple. The surgeon makes an incision in the natural fold beneath the breast, creates a cavity behind your natural breast tissue and then the breast implant is inserted. The wound is then closed and once healed, scarring is usually quite discrete.
The implant can be placed either above or below the muscle, as these images show. This is something that your surgeon would recommend on, after examination of your physiology.
There are a wide range of breast implants available:
Shape options - the classic round implant remains the most popular for our customers. However, the "anatomical" or "teardrop" shape is growing in popularity for women who are looking to restore volume and/or get a natural shape
During your medical consultation, your Surgeon will evaluate your health and expectations. If your breasts are sagging, your surgeon may also recommend a Mastopexy (uplift). Be sure to discuss your expectations frankly with your Surgeon and you'll get sensible advice.
Your Surgeon will also assess your medical and family history and request any pre-operative tests which may be necessary and discuss your expectations and explain what can realistically be achieved. Your Surgeon will explain the risks and benefits of this procedure and perform a thorough physical examination of the breast area. Do be sure to say if you smoke or you are taking any vitamins or medication.
Your surgeon will also discuss with you what sort of size and shape breasts you want to achieve. Some women may want a natural look, perhaps to restore the volume lost through breast-feeding. Other women may wish to enhance their natural curves and aim for a large cup size, perhaps DD or more. Be sure to discuss your requirements with the surgeon so that you can agree on the best implant for you.
The Surgeon will give honest advice on the procedure – if appropriate, they would recommend if it was NOT in your best medical interest to proceed with surgery. If you are not satisfied with your medical consultation, a second consultation with another Surgeon can be arranged for further advice.
All of the Anaesthetists and Plastic Surgeons that would carry out your procedure are fully qualified professionals who have successfully completed years of training. The Surgeon undertaking the consultation will normally be the one scheduled to do your operation in person. However in unforeseen circumstances it may be necessary to change Surgeons. In this instance the replacement Surgeon would be of an equal standing. All the Surgeons are registered with the GMC. You may wish to confirm this by telephoning 0845 357 3456 or writing to them at: General Medical Council, 178 Great Portland Street, London, WC1N 6JE.
Post-operative follow-up is of paramount importance. Each patient undergoing Breast Augmentation surgery will be given post operative appointments for wound management and suture removal. Post-operative instructions are vital and we consider it very important that you adhere to them. Failing to follow these guidelines and attend your appointments can adversely affect the outcome of surgery and put patient safety at risk.
Your post-op appointments can be arranged at your local clinic from a wide network across the UK.
You will normally stay in hospital for one night after a breast augmentation, then return to recover at home.
You should expect to feel some discomfort afer the operation and will probably want to sleep quite a bit on the first day. The next day the pain should have eased considerably so that any further discomfort can be controlled by medication.
Recovery varies from person to person, but you should anticipate feeling sore and swollen for the early weeks, although most of the bruising and swelling usually dissipates within 3 weeks.
You are recommended to wear good post-surgical support bra after surgery. These are specially designed for breast surgery patients and have front fastenings, wide straps and soft materials that you will appreciate in your early recovery. Some women choose to purchase high street sports bras. These are cheaper, but generally fasten at the back and are less supportive. However, they are a great option after the first 2-4 weeks.
You should not wear under-wired bras until your surgeon has discharged you OR confirmed that your breasts are sufficiently healed.
You must avoid strenuous activity for 4-6 weeks - this includes lifting and vigorous sports activities.
The procedure will leave scars which will fade over time. The scar lines are beneath the breast and generally hidden by underwear.
