Life with a Gastric Balloon

Your eating habits and lifestyle will change with a gastric balloon.  You will receive plenty of advice from our team of experts on living with the gastric balloon, but to give you an idea, these top 10 tips will help you to get the best results:

  1. Use small plates to help you get used to smaller portions and divide food into small amounts
  2. Have three meals and take healthy snacks or drinks between meals
  3. Drink at least one and a half litres of water a day
  4. Do not drink and eat at the same time - it can be useful to have a glass of water half an hour before the meal and one or two glasses after the meal
  5. Avoid fizzy drinks. Strong tea and coffee are also not advised
  6. Do not smoke before eating
  7. Do not have supper too late in the evening
  8. Eat at least two hours before going to bed
  9. Do more exercise, walk at least fifteen minutes each day.
  10. Stop eating if you feel any acid reflux

As the gastric balloon makes you feel full, you will find it quite natural to have smaller portions as you will feel fuller faster than before.  This helps you to learn to eat more sensibly - a habit that you will continue after your balloon is removed to maintain and continue your weight loss.  You can eat most foods although you will be advised to follow a healthy diet consisting of fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and chicken.
