Gastric Band Adjustments

The beauty of the gastric band is that it is so adjustable.  It can be tightened to increase the constriction on your stomach and accelerate weight loss.  However, if weight loss is too rapid or uncomfortable, the band can also be loosened.  This may also be advisable in certain medical conditions e.g. if you become pregnant.

Band adjustment may also be referred to as "band fill" (adding extra saline) or "aspiration" (removing saline).

Gastric Band Adjustments

When it is positioned around the top of the stomach, the band is filled with saline and a tube runs from the band to the "access port" which is positioned underneath the skin, usually though not always under the sternum.

To adjust the band, it's a simple case of adding more fluid or withdrawing some fluid.  A needle is passed through the skin into the port to add or remove saline.

Whether it's being made tighter or looser, band adjustments are a simple procedure carried out under local anaesthetic by a specially trained nurse.  It's similar to having blood taken i.e. minor discomfort.  It's such a quick procedure that it can literally be done in a lunchtime!

How Many Band Adjustments?

In the first year, you should expect several adjustments.  After that, it's on a weight loss basis - if your weight loss has slowed and you are hungry after eating, it may be time for an adjustment.

However, excessive adjustments are not advisable and a cautious approach is sensible. Our staff can advise if you have any concerns.
