Gastric Band / Lapband®

The Gastric Band is an adjustable banding system that places a small inflatable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach which restricts the amount of food that the stomach can hold.

The amount of food that can be consumed at one time is limited because of the new smaller upper pouch that is created by the Gastric Band and because the band constricts the top of the stomach, you feel fuller earlier and for longer, therefore don't eat as much.

This reduction in food intake results in safe, effective weight loss.

About Gastric Band

How does it work?

The silicone ring is placed around the upper part of the stomach, and the inner surface of the band is filled with saline which creates a new small stomach pouch, which in turn can only hold a small amount of food as the stomach storage area is reduced.  So if you have a gastric band fitted, you feel full sooner and therefore eat less.  It's a simple but effective tool to help you lose weight, but because you don't feel the same hunger, it helps you to manage your food intake.

Adjustment of the band

Gastric band in place

The beauty of a gastric band is that it can be adjusted to manage your weight loss at a healthy but effective pace.

A tube is connected to the Gastric Band which is connected to an access port placed beneath the skin during surgery. This access tube allows the surgeon or nurse to change the size of the band by adding or subtracting saline to the inner balloon of the band, to make it tighter or looser as required.

After surgery, adjustments are a simple procedure that a trained nurse can perform.  There's no need for further operations unless you decide to have the band removed.  Gastric bands ARE removable, but very few people choose that option as they can be adapted to suit your requirements for life.

Benefits to the patient

The gastric band is a relatively straightforward procedure. The band can increase or decreased restriction so that your weight loss can be managed. Digestion is not affected by the surgery and the surgery can be reversed if required.  People have lose many stones with gastric band surgery and in doing so improve their health in other areas.  Gastric bands help you lose weight, which means that those conditions associated with obesity can be eliminated in many cases.  Diabetes (type 2) can be cured, insomnia and blood pressure improved or cured - even infertility problems.  There are numerous reports of "gastric band babies"!

Other Weight Loss Surgery Options

The gastric band is the most popular weight loss procedure choice in the UK.  Compared to other options, it is less invasive and ultimately reversible.  It is also adjustable, which procedures like the gastric bypass are not.  Once the band is in place, it can be tightened for faster weight loss, or loosened as required.
