Liposuction

Liposuction (also known as Liposculpture or Lipoplasty) is a procedure to improve your body shape by removing unwanted fat from specific areas of the body.  In a skilled surgeon's hands, liposuction is quite an art, smoothing and shaping your body.

The procedure is used to help with stubborn areas of fat that have not responded to diet and exercise such as thighs, tummy, upper arms, neck, buttocks, knees, calves and ankles.

About Liposuction

The Liposuction procedure involves a tiny incision being made in the skin and a cannula (a hollow stainless steel tube) in inserted by the surgeon. The cannula is inserted into the deep fat layer and the surgeon pushes and pulls the cannula which breaks up the fat cells. The fat cells are removed with a vacuum pump or a syringe.

Why have Liposuction?

Once the fat cells are removed they do not return and are not replaced. So if you eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight you should continue to keep your new body shape. Please note that Liposuction is not a weight loss or obesity treatment, but a reshaping procedure.  It can be used in a variety of places - common choices are:

  • Tummy/abdomen
  • Flanks/thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Chin

Your Consultation

During your medical consultation, your Surgeon will evaluate your health and expectations. Be sure to discuss your expectations frankly with your Surgeon and be sure to say if you smoke or if you are taking any vitamins, or medication.

Your Surgeon will assess your medical and family history and request any pre-operative tests which may be necessary and discuss your expectations and explain what can realistically be achieved. Your Surgeon will explain the risks and benefits of this procedure and perform an examination.

The Surgeon may decide it is not in your best medical interest to proceed with surgery. If you are not satisfied with your medical consultation, a second consultation with another Surgeon can be arranged for a further opinion.

Surgeons and Anaesthetists

All of the Anaesthetists and Plastic Surgeons that would carry out your procedure are fully qualified independent professionals who have successfully completed years of training. The Surgeon undertaking the consultation will be scheduled to operate. However in unforeseen circumstances it may be necessary to change Surgeons. In this instance the replacement Surgeon would be of an equal standing. All the Surgeons are registered with the GMC. You may wish to confirm this by telephoning 0845 357 3456 or writing to them at: General Medical Council, 178 Great Portland Street, London, WC1N 6JE.

Post-Op Appointments

Post-operative follow-up is of paramount importance. Each patient undergoing surgery will be given post operative appointments for wound management and suture removal. Post-operative instructions are vital and we consider it very important that you adhere to them. Failing to follow these guidelines and attend your appointments can adversely affect the outcome of surgery and put patient safety at risk.

Liposuction Aftercare

Below The Knee Girdle - Stage 1After surgery, you will be fitted into an elastic garment in the operating theatre.  It is important that you do not remove this garment for a period of 10 days apart from to wash and therefore most patients choose to purchase a 2nd garment as a spare.

You may feel some discomfort, but that can be controlled by medication. You should drink plenty of fluid to replace that lost during the procedure.

Recovery depends on the extend of the procedure, but you should expect to feel sore and swollen for the early weeks and there will be bruising immediately after the procedure.

Do avoid strenuous activity or vigorous sport for 4-6 weeks to allow your body to recover and heal.

Liposuction is a keyhole procedure and tends to leave very small scars.  They will be red at first, but will fade with time and are generally hidden by underwear.
