Male Pattern Baldness
The term male pattern baldness is used to describe the usual process of hair loss
that develops in most men at some stage in their life.
The process starts with hair follicles on the scalp becoming smaller. This has the
effect that each new hair becomes thinner than the previous one. Finally the hair
follicle is so small that hair does not grow out of the surface of the scalp at
all.
1 - Recessions appear at
the front of the hairline.
2 - The hairline then begins to
move further back.
3 - Thinning areas may also
appear on the crown.
4 - Hair is lost from the crown
and the frontal region.
What are the causes?
Male pattern baldness is due to the affects of hormones on the hair follicles from
which many men are genetically predisposed to.
The hormone Testosterone is converted to DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which has the
affect of slowing down hair production by acting as a hormone receptor on the hair
follicle. This in turn produces weak shorter hair, until eventually hair may stop
growing from the follicle completely.
Hair Transplantation
More and more men today are taking advantage of the latest advancements in hair
restoration and hair transplantation techniques.
Hair transplantation is a minor day case surgical procedure that can bring remarkable
results.
